Obviously anyone with > 1973 model cars were not happy about this. > It all started when the authorities wanted to keep up to date with car ownership and threatened to charge road tax whether in use or not. Lots of concern from car museums, collectors who often ran their cars just in the summer, or taxed them one at a time. That's when they introduced free tax for cars over 25, but after a few years the new government decided this was anomalous and stopped the qualifying year at 1972. Since road tax was about £140 a year at the time, it was a big concession - maybe a vote-catcher for people affected too. Shame as my '73 camper (reg. 1974) and 1973 Type 3 project would both have been tax free the following year. I think there's pressure to change it to 30 years as that's about where it would now be. I must compose a letter to my MP on behalf of the club members and see if we can get help. He is in a marginal constituency, so might put the point! I think if we'd still had a car industry to be proud of in 1973 they would have extended it! Dave.
