Can rebuilt rods and cam be used with expectations of a long life? I live in Sunnyvale, CA, (Bay Area) so if any of you have had any good experiences with local shops please let me know.

I have probably rebuilt several hundred VW engines. I even used to line
bore my own cases. I have never had a VW engine fail due to a linebore
problem. Get it done by a reputable shop, and let them supply the
bearings, and you should be OK. Rimco is a good choice.
