How would a bad VR > cause this problem? As the VRs get old they age and tend to regulate at lower and lower voltages. For some reason, the FI tends to run rich as the system voltage gets lower. I SUSPECT that this was a "feature" that Bosch designed in to richen the mixture when cranking, and more so in cold weather, but they never foresaw the consequences of doing this on older cars. At med RPM on a warmed up engine (after a drive, NOT just idling) the system voltage should measure 14.1-14.4V at the battery. If it falls below 13.5V the FI will start to run rich. I've seen them as low as 12.8V; by that time the engine runs very poorly once it is warm. It's like you've left the choke on. The cure is to replace the VR. I recommend using genuine parts. I didn't realize you were talking about a 412. If this is a 74 then the FI is not D, but L, so I'm not sure if this still applies. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
