If this had happened to just one cylinder we might wonder whether something had 
happened to the valve or the seat, but this is just too unlikely to happen to 2 
valves at the same time. It's possible that there is space there, but you just 
don't know where to slip the feeler in, or that when you replaced the adjusters 
the pushrods slipped down and are no longer in the sockets at the bottome of 
the rockers.

Perhaps the most likely is that your distributor is in there wrong and you're 
trying to do this at the wrong times. Try setting this up for #2 and #4 and see 
if the feeler will slip in then.
