<x-flowed>I can answer about the 009 in a type 3.  The reason it works without the 
'flat spot' is the carbs that it is used with.  The 31 PICT and the 34 
PICT are the reason the 009 has the bad rap.  The 009 and these 'single 
carb' motors do not get along.  The 009 is fine  with a stock dual carb 
type 3/4 engine.  My only beef with it is that it does not get as good 
of MPG as the 050 on the same set ups.  I have used the 009, with 
frustration on several single carb VWs, and the 009 on lots of dual carb 
VW with great success.  Look at your application, then decide.
