Don't worry, you haven't hurt anything. FIrst you have to start with the engine at #1 and adjust the #1 valves. If they won't both adjust, you're probably actaully at #3, so the engine is off by 360 deg and the dist is off by 180 deg. After that, "by the book would have you rotate the engine CLOCKWISE by 180 deg (which moves the dist CLOCKWISE by 90 deg) and then adjust the #4 cyl. Repeat and do #3. Repeat and do #2. You're doing these in the firing order which is 1 4 3 2.
