We can put our cars on "resto" where you pay nothing for the registration,
but it doesn't lapse - I've had a car on resto for 4 years now :-)

The WOF tests are stored on computer - if you don't have one done you can't
register the car (unless it's on resto or a "classic" which is over 40 years
old. Then you can register it without a WOF (warrant of Fitness)

What happens if you take your car off the road to restore it, do you still
have to pay registration every year? What happens if you miss a couple of
tests?
