Re: [T3] Inspections (was: Re: [T3] Crunchy steering?)

Hi Ben,

Once a car reaches 3 years old it has to be tested every 6 months.

I find that rediculous - for my car, it was just inspected (WOFed) at
85,000kms, it's next test isnt due until I've likely passed 130,000kms
because I travel about 45,000 per year it that car. That 45,000 km's from
85K to 130K is when the car is likely to start develpoing faults. I already
know the suspension is getting worn (unless all 2001 model toyota corollas
handle that badly! I'd rather drive a beetle or a type3 for better
handling!). Seems odd to me.

(It will be replaced at 100K anyway (lease vehicle), I'm hoping for a Fiat
Stilo :-) The New VW's are either too underpowered (polo 1400cc) or too
expensive AND underpowered (golf). I wouldn't mind a peugeot 206 or Renault
Clio though :-))

Of course it is up to the driver/owner to keep the car up to WOF stardards.
If you have a valid/current WOF, but you car is not up to standard, then
your insurance company can deny claims - often they don't though.

Allan :-)

Here cars newer than 2 years (I think) only have to be tested once a year,
and all others are 6 months. Same thing with modifications here, any
modifications to the vehicle structure or major suspension mods etc. are
supposed to be certified.

The silly thing is, a lot of the bigger testing centres don't know how to
check old VW's. I only take my cars to be tested at my VWFLAPS, I have had a
1302S pass, with the front ball joints with about 1.5cm of flop in it, and
another where the seatbelts didn't even work. Apparently they are getting
tough on that sort of thing now, I think they have had quite a lot of
accidents related to things not checked properly, and the testing centres
can be held liable if a car has an accident and it is something that should
have been checked.
