Many years ago, when I was first starting out on a long westward trip on a brand new engine, I had gotten about 100 miles when I noticed that my gas gauge had not moved a bit. This wouldn't have bothered me except for the fact that this was a new engine and I was about to drive it on a 3000 mile trip. I stopped at a rest stop on the interstate and proceeded to check things over to make sure that I hadn't done something stupid with the timing, etc. The amazing thing was how many people stopped to offer help, thinking that I was crippled. They were universally puzzled when I tried to explain that I was worried that my gas mileage was too high. Can't say that this was surprising.... After a half hour of finding nothing amiss, I noticed how windy it was and that this VERY strong wind was from the east, which was unusual for these parts. At that point we just accepted this good fate and drove on. My mileage that day was 38 mi/gal and I've never come close to it again. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
