The so-called "cool tin" was used ONLY in type 3 engines starting in 71. The correct cooling tin for your 68 is the part you have described. If you want to change to the later tin you will need several parts in addition to the cool tin, because they changed several parts to make the cool tin fit. The best way to do this would be to find a complete virgin 71-3 type 3 engine that has been blown and that you can buy for a song. Yes, the cool tin should make some small difference, but I really don't know how much. Personally, I place more importance on the late cases with the 10mm oil passages, full flow filtering, counterweighted cranks, and case savers, not necessarily in that order. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
