The only time I have had alt bearings fail (was on my bug), they were fine
at lower RPM. However once I got above 4k they started howling like a cat in
heat. At 6k they were screaming like a banshee. When bearings go bad, they
"usually" range from "moan" to "howl" to "whine" not "rattle"

Because the noise seemed to go away at higher RPM, I would have guessed
something like the fan being loose. Lower RPM gives it a chance to wobble.
At higher RPM the centrifugal force keeps it "centered". I personally
wouldn't guess something loose on the tin, but that's because it sounded too
loud compared to the engine.

As for checking if its the Gen...just remove the fan belt and fire it up for
a sec or two. Should be able to verify if its the gen or no.
