Can a carb related issue cause the backfiring? I am no expert, > but my limited knowledge tells me that this is not as likely a carb issue. That was a good test, so I would open up the right side carb and see what you find. This sounds like it is most likely a carb problem, but there are certainly other possibilities. You might want to adjust the valves and check the compression to rule some of them out. > I found some other things that scare me a bit. 1. I was pretty low on > oil. With that right side "plug" missing you would certainly lose much more air out there than in normal operation of the engine. It's possible that something overheated, but I'd stick with the carb and compression tests first. > Is it possible that I have a valve sticking or burned that is causing > this problem? Sure, and a compression test would help find this. -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
