Out of curiosity, what type of petrol do you get over in the US? Is it
really something like 82 octane, like I think I remember reading somewhere?
More to the point, what difference does octane rating make to engine
performance and the way it is tuned?

About 25 years ago, I think you could get 81 octane petrol here too. I've no
idea who used it.

Nowadays, most cars here run on 95 octane lead-free. You can also get
"premium" lead-free which different petrol stations call different names,
which is something like 98 or 99 octane.

Unlike in Europe, you can also still get 96 octane leaded fuel here, which
is what I feed my Type 34, and also my lawn mower.
