I'm sure that what their lawyers are telling them is that if they don't protect their trademarks they will lose them. To some extent this is true, but all they have to do is make it really easy to apply for a license and be granted one. They really should have just concentrated on sites which put VW in a bad light. If they would only make it simple this problem would never have come up, but the lawyers got in there and had to prove that they were worth their excessive wages, so they wrote extremely defensive and one-sided contracts that have now managed to offend a large portion of their customer base. I doubt the lawyers are concerned about this, as marketing is not their responsibility.
