Shad, Ive really got to take the time and type in my experience as I wrote it when it happened about 1990. Id be interested in your ideas on what happened... I think it was twofold but I think (at the time anyway) the synth's didnt transfer heat well... and to cut just a breif part of my experience out: I couldnt drive My car over 40 without the oil temp gauge going over 200 (usually maxed at 175 on the hottest days) when the outside air was in the 40's. My air flaps were open, and the mixture was correct... there really isnt much else that can make these engines overheat if there is nothing wrong with them. The oil also thinned out so much that the oil pressure was about half of what it was with the Pennzoil. After a trip I put the regular back in and all returned to normal (minus the oil pressure from the damaged bearings). The piston didnt burn through for another year, but it was cracked... Im assuming from the synthetic heat trauma. Let me get all this online and see what you think... I documented the entire incident at the time. Also, too high an oil > temperature (unless it is something like 500F, which isn't possible) doesn't > make pistons crack.
