If you don't mind taking a trip out to Astoria/Woodside, there's a guy there who can probably help you. His name is Valdo and he has a small three-bay shop off Northern Boulevard. I dropped my bug off with him when the engine ate a valve, no appointment (hell, I hadn't even met the guy before that) and in a week or so it was ready. He said the guy who builds them for him works on Long Island and he builds engines so that they'll be reliable, "not for racing." I had it for maybe 30K miles after that, and I was more than happy with it, as well as the service. Anytime I brought my car in for anything, he did a quick tune-up for free. Sometimes he didn't even charge me for minor stuff. If you want more info, let me know... Hopefully the guy's still there.
