All US type 3s were FI from 68-73.

One thing that strikes me is that building a new larger engine will involve a
long process of working over the carbs to get them to work just right with the
new engine. It is not a simple matter of just slapping together some parts.
Even if you get someone else to rebuild the engine you will DEFINITELY spend a
few months to a year or so of your own time learning about carbs and getting
them all worked out. If you're willing to do this, then I suggest that you
might also be willing to build your own engine.
There are certainly a few good builders out there, but it's important to
understand that NOBODY cares as much about your car as YOU do.
