I would have guessed that this was from earlier than Nov 61, since they started 
in 4/61 and got to 13,000 by the end of 61. Perhaps production ramped up slowly 
at first, however.

My guess is that this case came originally as T 172401, which would have been a 
66 dual carb case. This was the first year these were officially imported into 
the US, so this helps the probability. I'm guessing that someone added the R to 
indicate a Replacement during a rebuild at some point. Look closely to see if 
you can see the remains of a zero under the R.

You're probably going to have to repair your originals. A good body man or 
welder might be able to help you out.  

I think the early engines had several things in common with the 1200cc beetle 
engines: Heads were one, cases with the cam running right in the case (no 
bearings) were another.

If you mean at the rear edge (rear is rear) then early engines had separate 
plates which bolted on there. You should see 2 holes for 6mm screws at the 
trailing edge where these pieces bolted on. These will probably also be very 
hard to find.
