Pardon me if I try to answer all in one post as oposed to breaking it out over several. I dont know about the engine number but I do know it is early. Jim knows as he has the microfish. If you truly have a "compleet" early longblock it has more in common with a 40 hoarse bus motor than a T3. The intakes are flat and not angled as on later single ports. This makes for the manifold being flat and unique to the early motors. The later regular "common" angled manifolds are easy to find and pop up on the samba or at swaps usualy with carbs with them. Air cleaners on the other hand are very simular to FI ones and usually end up in the same bin to be left to rot away. Finding one may be hard. The Y bolt that holds the cleaner down is the same or simular as on FI cars, the body to cleaner section can be used as well. You are spot on in noticing that the single port tin on your 65 is different than what can fit in the bay of a 61-63. This is because the metal in the bay was widened in 64 to accomodate the dual carb set-up. The extra space is needed to adjust the carbs. Conciquently the tin that covers the intake area was widened as well. I have tons of pics I just posted to the samba reguarding all these and more unique differances on a unmolested early motor. One of the major reasons I bought the car just recently. Look deep into my photos as I have alot of info pics you need posted. Jim you take a look as well as there is shots of a unrestored, untouched early 62 motor. And you can see the engine bay restraints. http://thesamba.com/vw/gallery/index.mv?search+Jason%20Weigel+exact See above link. jason > Hi all > > I need some help on early engines I have a late November 61 T34 (chassis > 0002910).
