On the other hand, there's a fertile bed for imagining here -- what look and
features might a Type 3 Audi have had? I don't really know much about Audi,
its market or even whether it was associated with VW in the Type 3 period.
Might a cross-badging or Audi technology have helped boost production or
performance? Just thinkin' ....

VW bought Auto Union from Mrecedes in 1965, Auto Union was formed in the 1930s, and consisted of Audi, Horch, DKW and NSU. In 1965, the Audi name wasnt used, the cars were marketed as NSU, DKW and Auto Union. They were mostly 2-stroke engined cars, and pretty low volume cars compared to VW at the time.

In the late 60's VW chose to bring the old Audi name from the 30's back into the light, and also chose to try to market it as an uplevel brand to compete with Mercedes and BMW. It took a long time for them to accomplish that, but at the time, there wasnt much that VW's model range would have benefitted from. The NSU, DKW and Auto Union names were dropped by the early 70's

It wasnt until the Audi 80 (aka Audi Fox in USA) was introduced in 1972 that the VW range took advantage of this, with the first generation Passat (aka Dasher) being a fastback and Variant version of the 80, as you all know, the Passat was introduced as the replacement for the Type 3.

The Passat is also a Type 3, even today! The first generation was a type 32, where the Fasty and Notch were known as the type 31. Today's Passat is called the Type 3B.
