Maybe I'm just lucky with my engine or something but I've always found
that it will turn over relatively easily by hand - i.e. grabbing the
pulley at the generator end. I'm wondering why there's all this need for
screwdrivers and things? I can see the sense in using a wrench...

Not when it is up on a hoist.
Plus, I am getting too old to be crawling in and out under cars so much.
This way, once you are under there, you stay until you are done.
