I found my problem with the popping. When I did not find anything internal on the head or elsewhere to cause the symptoms, I started back through everything I had previously checked and double checked, starting wth the ignition parts to #3. I pulled the plug wire from number #3 and checked it with my multimeter. Got infinite resistance. What?? I had checked this before and gotten 1000 ohms. I had pulled the plugged and the wire and shorted it to the body and gotten spark. So, I screwed the resistor end off and checked the wire and it was fine. I checked the resistor end and it was open! I had found my problem! I can only assume that it was intermittent and I got it at a good time the first couple of times and finally at a bad time this last time. I took another plug wire and stole the resistor end (it was good, checked out at 1000 ohms) and used it. After putting the 3/4 side of the engine back together and reinstalling it, she fired right up with out the popping. Wish I had triple checked the plug wires earlier. Would have saved me dropping the engine and tearing it apart. The good news is that I now know that there is nothing wrong with the head or the piston or the rods and stuff. My new rule of thumb will be to triple check the simple stuff. 8^) Thanks to everyone for there help and advice.
