All mine have the timing plug in there, but I agree with you. Most owners 
have never seen one of these plugs.

Remember that the AC belt requires 2 holes for the belt, as well as a slot 
between them so you can get the belt in there. Alternatively, you can cut the 
slots out to the bellows seating area, but either way it's more open space.

The slots could (and should!) be sealed with duct tape, but I suspect that the 
percentage of AC type 3s with sealed slots is about the same as the 
percentage of type 3s with timing plugs. 

Whatever you do, every leak in this area is hard on the engine.
