They were actually on the engine when I got the car, and this was not correct as I have late engine and late cooler. Bottom line don't rely on color only, :-). We had a pretty long talk on this subject about 2 years ago. I couldn't find any archive of that on my computer, but I do remember something that may be interesting. With late engine and late cooler you need the thin seals and you are not supposed to use any spacer under the cooler (on the studs). But on my specific engine and cooler (I'm positive they are both late), it is obvious that you need a thin spacer to avoid over-stretching the seal. It is actually quite easy to feel that your over-stretch the seals : the torque you apply on the nuts to seat correctly the cooler on the engine is clearly too high for their size. I don't know if it could be related to tolerance in the parts, but I do have 3 sets of late seals, one is coming from a Brazilian gasket set, the second directly from VW (they still carry them), the third one I don't know. They are all the same thickness. Hope this helps.
