Well, I reassembled my ball joints tonight as per list feedback and my shop manuals specs, the upper one seemed ok. Messed around a little more and I think I finally figured out the source of the problem - the inner wheel bearing on my '63 Squareback has been replaced with the wrong one. The inner diameter is just a bit too large so it is probably moving around when I drive, causing brake rubbing: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/10162002/bearing_gap.jpg http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/10162002/bearing_gap2.jpg Outer wheel bearing was fine. I noticed the parts book shows the inner wheel bearing as a bearing and a seal - 2 pieces. My bearing is one piece consisting of both parts, all solid metal. I think my '65 T34 was 2 pieces so '63s must be the hardcore old school style. I also noticed that the super long bolt that goes through the front front wheel cylinder and into the spindle has been replaced with a short bolt identical to the one that is used for the rear front wheel cylinder. I need a long one! Long vs. short seen here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/10162002/wheelcylinderbolts.j pg I need an inner wheel bearing too but I think I can call around for that... -- Everett Barnes '63 Squareback ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
