You really get into a lot of variables once you start down this road. The 009 was designed for a type 1 engine and it has lost favor even with that crowd. When you install it in a type 3 engine it interferes with some things when the dist drive gear is installed in the type 1 manner. It interferes with other things when you install the drive gear in the type 3 manner. Note that on the side of the dist there is a groove and hole drilled to allow splash oiling of the dist shaft. If you compare a type 1 and a type 3 dist you will see that this slot/hole is in different positions in each, but when each is installed correctly in their intended engine, the slot/hole ends up pointing in the same direction. This is the direction that the oiling can work. If you orient it differently, it probably won't get oiled as well. But you can't orient a 009 properly in a type 3 engine because of clearance problems. In the end, the real solution is to use a properly oriented type 3 dist in your type 3 engine. This works easily, is cheap, and it's reliable. There are LOTS of good type 3 dists to choose from, it's just that you can't buy any of them new, you have to fix up one that you buy for next to nothing at a swap meet. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
