I remember being surprised in France by the range of acids available in the supermarket - quite strong hydrochloric acid was sold for cleaning paths! Organic solvents were readily available - carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethane etc. Some of the organic solvents (the ozone-depleting ones) are now banned from sale so wouldn't be on shelves any longer, but it seemed incrongruous for them to have been on shelves within reach of small children. I suppose this was six or so years ago; no doubt the hazard is now controlled better. If I can't buy any in the UK, I'll know where to holiday next! Dave.
