Thanks, that's what I was thinking, different expansion rates of
different metals. Last year's thread on this stopped short of explaining
exactly why the short stud clearance increased with warmup rather than
decreased.

My 62 Ghia has a long stud engine that was never converted, and I can
confirm that the clearances get tighter with warmup: when I first bought
the car I foolishly adjusted the valves to .006 and as it warmed up the
valve clearance disappeared and the engine stalled itself.  : O
