Then you should see if you can figure out how to get the injector electrical 
connectors apart and tighten them up slightly.

No, this is a process which, once done right, should never have to be redone. 
It remains possible that they have it wrong however since many shops don't 
realize that the type 3 needs to be done differently from a beetle. Still, if it 
ran okay for some time this way this can't be your current problem.

Just do this much:

Pull the hoses, adjust idle, set timing to 5 BTDC. Reconnect hoses, adjust 
idle again. There's no need to plug anything.

OTOH, I'd deal with the injector plugs first.
