I'd use weatherstrip. It keeps thing from squeaking.  

The fuel screen isn't necessary at all until you have one of those incidents 
when you really wish you hadn't left it out. The same part is used in beetles, 
perhaps even in later cars. See your dealer. OTOH, they can be cleaned and 
reused.
