<x-charset Windows-1252>I'm totally with John on this one. I think there was something mentioned previously about using 944 rotors and 914 calipers. I started to price them out, but I'd rather go with a more readily available rotor, like a Tilton or Brembo. For the relatively light weight of our cars, plain solid steel or even vented ones shouldn't be too bad. Get a "hat" made to mount them and you're off the hook. Use again, a more readily available caliper - like Jetta or Golf to save some bux there, and have the parking brake done for you. I just did a somewhat similar conversion on my Suburban last year - now it's got 1 ton pickup rotors and '76 - '78 Cadillac calipers. I still have to get custom parking brake cables made, but they'll wait until after it gets the "baja" treatment, so to speak. I wanted 4-wheel disks because a 'burb already weighs as much as both my type III's and Toby's Jetta combined, and it's gonna get heavier with 38" tires. The calipers replace the backing plates, just as John mentioned - it actually has a fairly similar setup to the bearing caps on the type III's, and they are just 2 pieces of 1/2" steel that bolt together and line up correctly for the caliper positioning. Oh yeah, and they work REALLY well - don't tailgate any ugly green Suburbans in the Fort Lauderdale area.
