I have successfully cleaned these off just by drawing the wire carefully 
between a finger and a fingernail. Just be careful to pull straight along the 
wire and don't pull too hard, it's actually possible to stretch the wire by 
pulling too hard.

I think the 6V and 12V senders are alike, as long as it's for a type 3.
