If the dist is cold, old grease in the points plate can make those parts slide slugglishly, and a retarded engine will certainly hesitate. Try taking a look at the dist when the engine is stone cold. Put a small clean hose on the vacuum retard nipple and remove the dist cap. Suck on the hose and watch the points plate rotate CW, then suddenly release the vacuum. The plate should SNAP back.
