If the release cable is not broken, maybe you can pull harder on the release 
latch by removing the glove box, detaching the lever and pulling on the 
cable from inside with vice grips.  Anyone ever try this?

If that does not work, you can get in through the access hole for the shift 
lever (access hole on front apron).  This works *if* the spare tire is not 
there...  That's how I routinely opened the hood on my old Fastback.
