[T3] Automatic to Manual?
<x-flowed>
I've got a '71 square FI AT. www.dragcrab.com/vw I've never been able to
get the Fuel injection to run lean, (about 15mpg around town) but that's not
my question, because it will never be solved online. (I've tried
everything, read everything, checked everything, so the only thing to do is
do it all over again and again.) anyway, my problem is that it's got over
300,000 miles on it, (3rd engine, of course) and I think the torque
convertor has taken all 300,000 of those miles. When the transmission gets
warm the car can't get off the line to save itself. It just bogs down.
Apparently rebuilt torque convertors run around $200. Incidentally, that's
about the same price I've been quoted for a used manual transaxle. The
problem is that my auto square has no clutch tube. I checked. I cried.
There is a ray of hope that comes from the sandrail community. They have an
attachment that bolts to the standard transaxle to act as a slave cylinder
in a hydraulic clutch assembly. Running hydraulic lines and putting that
attachment on the transaxle doesn't seem so hard, but I don't know what I'd
do about the pedal assembly. Am I talking crazy talk? Has anyone
successfully converted their auto to a manual? How about going hydraulic?
It's my daily driver, and I plan on driving to Parma. (heck, when I was
living in Seattle I traveled to Boise and back a couple times, so Portland
to Parma should be fine) Sorry for the length, but inquiring minds want to
know...
