It had been idling a little rough because of the valves/timing AND when she would park it, it would occasionally not start up again right away... two unrelated events that the previous owner had taken together as the same thing. She's running very nicely now, and i found out about the starter after tracking it down in the parking lot of our local market the other day when we went to turn her over and... nothing. Pretty sure I'm on top of her now.
