Every engine runs best when it is up to its design operating temp. There are a number of things that make this true. Lower oil viscosity and better fuel vaporization are the 2 main ones. Unless you do something to prevent it, any engine will do what you have observed. What VW did was to incorporate a throttle linkage in with the automatic choke. This gives the car less gas as it warms up. In your case, I'd guess that the normal idle circuit was not working either because the chokes had been disconnected, or the throttle cable was too tight to allow the carbs to return all the way to normal idle. > FYI: I have fixed the issue and my Square is now a JOY to drive!
