> My thoughts are: Why re-invent the wheel? I bought a Graber #1059 Cool -- thanks for all the suggestions. I have a couple of reasons for re-inventing the wheel here. First, I don't think I want a carrier over the rear hatch, as this will get in the way of access to the engine and rear cargo. If I need to get to the engine "right now", I don't want to have to try to lift a hatch with bikes on it, or spend a couple of minutes taking bikes off. As far as adding a roof rack on top, well, my Square already has a screwed-on original rack from the dealer. Not so sure that a new drip-rail-mounting rack would clear the rack that's on there. Also, some quick shopping shows that the likely racks and attachments for the roof, if they could be made to work along side my current rack, would set me back as much as a couple of hundred bucks. I don't want to spend a couple of hundred bucks at the moment. I may do so eventually, especially if the rack mounts on the drip rails and can be made to work on a Beetle, too. The universal skewer mount for the front forks seems worth a try, and is cheap. The mounting was one of the trickiest bits in my mind, and here I'm using this good option for not re-inventing the wheel. Let's hope it works out! If it fails here, I'll mount it to a board to sit on the floor of my Bus when the middle seat's removed; the bikes flop around too much when I just toss them in the bus. -Greg ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
