I don't know about the automatic, but my standard 73 had a similiar problem that would keep it from going over 45. Turned out I had a bad connection on an injector. Sounds it may only be running on 3 cylinders. Push down on each injector connection one at a time. If your idle goes higher on one, that one is your problem. It could also be lack of spark in one cylinder.
