[T3] mysterious 3rd gear problem

Hey all.

The air-cooled gods do not smile on me this week.
First, my square loses brakes - after locking 'em up to avoid hitting a cat,
I find I have a very squishy pedal. Seems the sudden braking has blown a
pinhole in the line that runs along the side of the tunnel... my carpet &
floorpan are now soaked with fluid... I'll be replacing this today.
Question: Should this problem make me distrust the whole system? Are there
other things that might explode w/ the pressure from sudden stops?
Then, my wife's square develops a mysterious symptom: No power in 3rd gear.
'69 AT, converted to stock-like carb setup. Revs fine & smooth when parked.
When in gear, accelerates wonderfully thru 1st & 2nd - then gets to 3rd, and
just sorta dies. Drives rough, like it's running on 3 or less cylinders.
Won't get above 35 mph, no matter what. Tank/lines/pump/carbs all
new/rebuilt, cap/plugs/wires all good, timing/dwell spot-on. Should I
suspect a tranny/vacuum issue? Even thinking about fiddling with that AT
frightens me - I hope it's anything BUT that. Or could it be
distributor-related, i.e. advances fine until the load increases in top gear?

We're borrowing a friend's B*g to get us through the week (thanks, Kris!).....
why must these things happen all @ once? Is there some sort of universal
constant that forces these problems to occur together? Has anyone else's
ride mysteriously improved this week, and I'm paying for it? what, what?

Please advise, thanks so much.
