<x-charset iso-8859-1>I've been phone conferencing w/Brian Fye and he's been keeping me level-headed. Yes, what you describe is happening (KA-POW outta the exhaust) and your suggestions are the same as Brian's. There were itty-bitty pieces of ??? (gasket material?) that I blew out w/compressed air and wiped away in the carbs and jets. Turns out my main's are too small (will correct once I get my larger exhaust). Until I get the carbs back together I can't test the exhaust header for leaks but, big air pump + stock diameter piping = blown gasket probably. An oops for me, since the exhaust is temporary until I get the new system I reused the old gaskets...the kind that are metal and can only be used once...let's hope this is the problem :) Thanks for the good vibes! -- Toby Erkson air_cooled_nut@pobox.com '72 VW Squareback, '95 VW Jetta, '81 Gold Wing http://www.icbm.org/ ... > Is the car really backfiring?
