I just use a 1/2" ratchet with a 3/4" adapter and 36mm socket. I stick a great big 6ft piece of pipe over the handle and it gets gland nuts and axle nuts off no worries. Sometimes if nuts are rusted, or just stuck, it can help to tighten them just a bit, to break the rust, and then loosen them.
