Re: [T3] no turning back...

We got the axles out and had a look at the wear. There's some bad
news in that one side gear is cracked, and one of that side fulcrum
plate is worn down nearly .010" and is cracked. However, the axle
spade might be usable. It has perhaps .002" uneven wear on one side
of the spade (the same side as the worn fulcrum plate). Is the axle
usable? I will call Transform Monday to find a source for a new side
gear and fulcrums. I know there are clearance requirements, but I
assume I could measure the axle spade and order fulcrums to fit.
One other thing. We broke off two 1/2" drives on the gland nut!
No we didn't learn our lesson the first time... What now? Worst case
is I borrow a truck and bring the whole thing to a shop with an impact
wrench. Is there some type of heavy duty breaker? The first tool was
a "Husky" with a 2 ft. handle.
I met a guy today at the VWFLAPS with a nice '67 Square. I hope I
passed along some wisdom about his front end shimmy. He needs to
ditch his Type 3 trailer hitch to clear his driveway, and I
volunteered to take it off his hands...
