The thermostat in your oil system is a good idea. When the oil stays cold
the viscosity stays high, which is not a good thing because it can cause
excessive heat on the bearing surfaces (higher friction) when the engine is
warm. When oil gets to hot the viscosity goes down and the oil wedge between
the moving parts is lost and you end up with metal to metal contact. The
worst thing is by the time you know there's a problem the damage is already
done. Talk with you engineering types at work, they can give you a nuts and
bolts insight

After solid lifters the hydraulic lifters take some time getting use to the
no noise. I have a set in my 72 Squareback with a 30 mm high volume oil
pump, and YES they are quit as any modern engine with the same lifters. You
should really like them.
