Never heard of them being used.
I'm surprised you can't get a Gunson Carbalancer from a UK car shop - not
too pricey.  My old Variant PO soldered two small pipes into the air-cleaner
over the intakes to which a simple loop of clear polythene pipe can be
fitted.  I half-fill the U-shape with paraffin (kerosene) in case it gets
drawn in, and I can check the balance both at idle and at higher RPM, under
operating conditions with the air-cleaner attached.  Best way of all, and
the cheapest if you don't mind the small mod to the air-cleaner.
