First off I agree that a careful head job and porting is probably the most valuable thing you can do here, and it will work with the stock carbs as well as the aftermarkets. Anyone considering this should study the Bill Fisher book AND Bergs white paper on heads before they start. A free flow exhaust is a quick and easy HP improvment, but they have down sides in fit and durablity. Both porting and exhaust changes will make you want to adjust the jetting of the carbs. See the Bill Fisher book. Lastly, I seriously doubt if Keith is in the 80-90 HP range, at least not real HP. Almost all the numbers you read are carefully inflated to "keep up with the Jones's." More on this in the Bill Fisher book. There was a thread in the aircooled newsgroup a couple of years ago started by one of the more knowledgable owner/mechanics who finally got to use someones dyno. After all the work he had put into his engine he couldn't believe that his engine was only putting out ~45 HP (at the wheels.) He decided that his gearbox must be only about 30% efficient, because he just KNEW that his engine was putting out at least 150HP. Our egos make us easily misled. ;-) > In my less educated days I ran slip-in 88's with higher CR in the > square, and in its short life Id say I had 5-10 HP more... I barely > noticed it.
