Just because it doesn't run, or just doesn't run well, I wouldn't decide that the engine needs to be replaced. There are a lot of things that can be cured for much less than $100, while a good engine should cost more than $1500. From there, the sky's the limit. Of course you can spend less, but then you get questionable quality. 71 is one of the better years, so my bet is that you just have a few trouble spots that will be relatively cheap to fix.
