I was going to ask HOW you tested these parts, then you posted this: > Here's what I think happened: I was trying to set the timing with > a strobe, and one of the tach-to-coil wires accidentally grounded > against the engine. A short there would not hurt anything. It would only keep the engine from running until the short was removed. > I pulled the points and there's a little "tit" on both sides of them. > I'm hoping this is just my problem. I tend to overanalyze things. What you are seeing is probably just normal points wear. > When I put my grounded test probe on the "distributor shaft" side of > the points, I don't get any current (no light to my probe), even when > the points are closed. Okay, I think this explains how you did the tests above; you used a test light and tested for voltage at several places. With the points closed there should be no voltage, but with the points open you should see voltage (light) there. Since you are actually getting spark, it appears that the system is working, so my guess is that you did some part of the test wrong. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
