This braid is important, but I'm not familiar with the style that Steve is describing. The later dists have this braid running from the fixed to the movable breaker plate. It's possible that they break from fatigue, but I think it's more likely that they break from abuse. Mine are all in like-new condition after 30 years, but I often see them frayed and broken.
