> That was me that had questions concerning GL-5. Jim A. said a GL-5 >"upgrade" would damage the brass syncros in the tranny due to its chemical >properties. I had used this in the past & still am because what I was finding >on the shelves was the proper viscosity (didn't know there was a GL specific >at the time). After hearing from Jim, I went to a FLAPS & the major majority >of what they have is synthetic & GL-5. There were one brand that had a GL-3, >GL-4, GL-5 on the bottle. I've thought about changing to that but really have >not encountered any problems with the GL-5 & have been running it for 2 years >now. Jim, could you expound on the GL-3, GL-4, GL-5 combination in one bottle? >hope this helps, >Tom I have read much about this and watched the ensuing debates in the ShopTalkForums a while ago. From my gathered knowledge, GL-5 has properties that attack the Brass Elements in our tranny's over time. This time could be as much as 10 or 15 years from what some have said, especially on a non-daily driven car. Also, it was said by many that those additives that harm are present in the GL-3, 4 & 5 compliant lubes. I was told by many that the pure synthetics do not have this harmful additive and therefore are acceptable for use, and I can say from personal experience that they really help to quiet down and smooth out a tranny. They are not cheap, but how often do you really change your tranny fluid? Disclaimer: Pardon me for regurgitating at least part of this info from other sources as I do not have the long time experience to know what 10-15 years of a certain oil will do to a tranny. But I haven't just taken the word of one (or even a dozen) person/people, this came from many, including a number of mechanics, and 2 folks having had many years in laboratories for oil companies. Also, it is near impossible to find GL-4 in any local FLAPS, but it can be ordered on-line from a number of VW Parts Sources.
